The Liturgy for Ash Wednesday begins in silence, then we hear readings from Holy Scripture and a homily. We are then are invited to keep a holy Lent, and to receive the imposition of ashes as a sign of our mortality and penitence.

This is followed by the Litany of Penitence, the assurance of God's absolution and pardon, exchanging the peace of the Lord, and sharing Holy Communion.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.
